Prenatal Vitamins: How to Compare

Let’s compare 2 prenatal vitamins – which would you rather take?

Prenatal #1 is Primacare Prenatal – often prescribed by OBGYNs
This is a once daily caplet which provides:

50 mg of docusate sodium – this is a stool softener, not even a required vitamin or mineral
250 mg of calcium – does not specify which form
240 IU of Vitamin D – the basic recommended daily allowance (RDA) is 400IU for an adult who is not pregnant and emerging research is setting that daily allowance even higher.
25mg of magnesium – the RDA for pregnancy is 350mg
30 mg of iron – CDC recommended dose
50 mg of B6
1 mg of folic acid – at least this is adequate to prevent neural tube defects.

Well that is it, that is all the supplemental nutrition that this mom and baby are going to get. Most nutrients do not even meet the RDA and then lets mention the missing ingredients…Vitamins C, E, K, A, minerals such as zinc, potassium, phosphorus, selenium and many others. Also these lack essential fatty acids, probiotics, CoQ10 and choline.

I think we can do better, don’t you??
